David Smith founded DVL Smith 25 years ago. The agency became a Top 10 UK market research agency evolving to become Illuminas Global. At the time in which David served as Chairman and CEO the agency had a turnover approaching £20m, employing around 170 people in London, New York, Austin Texas and Shanghai. David reintroduced DVL Smith as a consultancy in 2008.
David is a visiting Professor at the University of Hertfordshire Business School where he contributes to MBA programmes on entrepreneurialism and innovation.
David holds a Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree (with Distinction) and a PhD in Organisational Psychology from the University of London.
David is a multiple award winner from the Market Research Society, ESOMAR and other professional bodies. He is the holder of ESOMAR’s prestigious John Downham Award for Excellence in Marketing Intelligence and the MRS Silver Medal. DVL Smith won the Best Paper Award at the 2013 ESOMAR Congress. Most recently in 2015 David was awarded by AURA the Alan Hawks Award for Driving the Insight Industry Forward.
He is a Fellow and past Chairman of the UK Market Research Society, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and also a Fellow of the Institute of Business Consultants. He is a graduate member of the British Psychological Society. David is Vice President of ESOMAR, the worldwide marketing intelligence body.
David is the author of two books, both published by John Wiley: Inside Information – Making Sense of Marketing Data and The Art and Science of Interpreting Market Research Evidence. He has written over 60 papers and articles on customer insight and marketing intelligence.
He has run training and capabilities development programmes for major organisations throughout the UK, Europe, USA, Asia Pacific and Australia. David is a former Course Director of a University Business Studies degree.
David is an experienced public speaker, having delivered major lectures and speeches around the world.
