Here is the latest in our series on contemporary polymaths. In this instalment Adam Riley and I focus on Jacob Bronowski.
Bronowski blended both art and science in a belief that both seek to illuminate the mysteries of existence.
When working on his iconic series The Ascent of Man, Bronowski was asked why he — a scientist — wrote so poetically about topics like evolution and human creativity. He replied with characteristic wit:
“Science is a very human form of knowledge. We are always at the brink of the known; we always feel forward for what is to be hoped. Every judgment in science stands on the edge of error, and is personal”
What can you learn from a study of Bronowski?
